Dakshineswar Kali Temple
Culcutta is known for its two famous religious places.
One is
Kali-ghat and second is Dakshineswar .
Kali-ghat is the oldest temple of the
Goddess Kali in west Bengal, India.

Swami Ramakrishna used to do continue worship of
Goddess Kali over here. Kalighat temple was constructed in 15th century but recent building is only 200 years old. The name Calcutta is said to have been derived from the word Kalighat.

But Brahmans of Kali-ghat troubled Ramakrishna a lot and
forced him to leave Kali-ghat.
So Ramakrishna took an oath that if Goddess kali wants to
meet her devotee then she will have to come to devotees place. And he settled
in south of kolkata. Then queen of the Jaan Market built a temple in 1847-55.
Swami Ram Krishna became the priest of this temple after his elder brother.

The construction of temple was started in 1847 and got
finished in 1855. The construction of this temple took nine years. The area of
temple is 25 acre.
Inside temple there is deity Kali standing on Shiva, this
deity lies on silver lotus flower which has 1000 petals.
This temple
of Kali is built on
concept of nine spiral (navratna) architecture of Bengali architecture. Same nine spiral architecture is used at Tajmahal (Indo- Islamic architecture).
Its breadth is 46 feet and height is 100 feet. This temple
is also located on the eastern bank of river Ganga, in Bengal
this river is called Hooghly.
Swami Ramakrishna was priest of this temple.
Inside the premises of temple there is cottage of saint which remains open for
spectators.
