Tajmahal


Taj mahal is considered as the finest example of Mughal architecture. In 1983, the Tajmahal became a UNESCO world heritage site.

Most people think it is palace of Mughal king but it is not true. Taj mahal is a tomb and a place of pilgrimage (Urs).

The name of the queen was Arjuman Bano Begum. After marriage she got the title of Mumtaz mahal which means “My crown of the Palace” or “distinguished one”.




Fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (Khurram) had four wives. Mumtaj mahal was his second wife. They got married in 1612.
Other three wives names were Fatehpuri, Sir hindi and Akbarabadi.
In 1628, Shah Jahan became the Emperor of India.
In marriage span of eighteen years she gave birth to fourteen children to Shah Jahan.

In 1631, Shah Jahan marched southwards to deal with Khan Jahan Lodhi’s rebellion in the Deccan. Queen Mumtaj also accompanied Sha Jahan. She was fourteenth time pregnant. She passed away after giving birth to fourteenth girl child due labor pain. 




Shah jahan ordered for temporary burial of Mumtaj at Zainabad garden near Tapti river at Burhanpur. Burhanpur is 499 kms away from Mumbai. Burhanpur is district town of Madhya pradesh(MP).





In dec 1631, a team of architects started working on project of Tajmahal by the order of Shah jahan. Twenty thousand craftsman worked over here day and night an in another twenty two years in 1653 the construction of Tajmahal was completed.



Architects of Tajmahal


Ustad Ahmed Lahori was Chief architect at Tajmahal, Agra fort and Jama mosque at Delhi.

Lay out designer was Mohammad Isa Aufandi.

Calligrapher was Amanat Khan.

The credit of making Tajmahal does not go to one architect; there was a council of architects.

Different inlayers, artisans, blacksmiths were Hindu artist from India.

Gardens of Tajmahal 




It was mixed garden of flowers and cypress trees along the watercourses. It had fruit trees of tamarind,guava and pomegranate. 


The flowers were narcissus, fritillaria, crocus, iris, tulip and jasmine.

This garden was symbolic of Graden of Edan.
